How often should I give my dog some treats?

July 30, 2020

I get asked this question all the time and there really isn’t a right or wrong answer to this! It all depends on you!

Keep in mind that treats should not replace your dog’s regular food. These should be given in moderation and as a reward for good behavior, or simply just because your dog is being cute! The peanut butter that I use in my dog treats are without added sugar, salt, corn syrup or artificial sweetener (xylitol) so even if you reward your pup excessively, these treats will not cause tummy aches!

Let
me introduce you to the dog parents I have met:

The Pea: It’s me, but I also bake my four pups homemade treats, which means they get to eat them several times a day! Once in the morning after their first potty, another one when they’re being cute, one more for good behavior and last one before bedtime! That’s an average of 4x a day for 4 dogs! (This does not count what my husband gives them every time he passes the treat jar)

The Rodney: He orders treats by-the-gallon ziplock bags because he only has one big furry fella who does tricks for treats! 2 big bags only lasts him two weeks and when asked how many times he feeds his pup, his answer was “I have kids, who knows how much they feed Colby!”. So let’s say roughly 6x a day. His subscription box is every 10 days!

The Carly: She wakes up to give her pups treats after breakfast, she leaves for work, comes home and gives them another before bedtime! That’s 2x per day! She purchased her subscription box to be sent every 30 days!

The Nona: She has only guard dogs who are 100% outside and has never had treats, ever. When she saw me at the farmers market selling these, she was surprised that dogs get rewarded with “silly peanut butter things”.

So, there! Who are you as a dog parent and how many times do you give them treats?! While we’re on this topic, is a subscription box what you need for your dog? Depends on how often you feed them, but at least you know you won’t ever run out because I will keep baking and shipping them to you! Plus you’ll get a discount for opting for a box. 😉

Texas Cottage Food Law

July 09, 2020

I am very excited to share that I have obtained my official certification of the Texas Cottage Food Law. When I first started this small shop, I thought I was good to go, apparently, there are extra steps to be ensure the safety of my future customers and their pets! The Texas Cottage Law blankets anybody who makes homemade food with the intent to sell!

The Texas Cottage Law also requires that my packaging consist of the ingredients and allergens, as well as the address where I bake my treats and a reiteration that I am baking these treats out of my home!

Food Safety

I was happy to show this to all my customers who were concerned about food handling, especially because I bake these treats right out of my own kitchen - during this PANDEMIC crisis!

I have always used gloves and have been very aware of food-borne illnesses because I don't ever want any of my pets to suffer from food poisoning or salmonella and e-coli exposure.

Here are the steps I do to make sure my kitchen is always clean:

  • I wash my hands thoroughly with antibacterial hand soap.
  • I use a non-toxic disinfectatnt spray to clean my counters before and after baking and packing product.
  • My baking pans, scoops, mixer paddles and spatulas are washed thoroughly right after use.
  • All my dog treat baking tools are stored in one corner in my kitchen. This area is SAFE from any exposure to raw food or chemicals, bacterial or any possible viral exposure.
  • All my shipping tools like labels and packing bags are also in my "Dog Treat" cupboard.
  • Gloves are always used when packing dog treats.

This safe and sanitized way of handling dog treats for sale are also the same steps I take when baking my own dogs' treats, so most of these regulations are not a unique experience for me. For your viewing pleasure, here is the view of my treat corner, as well as my baking counter space!

I hope this post clarifies any concerns or questions that you may have! Just know that your pet's safety is also top of mind, especially because these treats are also what my pets eat!

I know, PUN intended! Just wanted to make sure you're paying attention, I named our website PEAnut butter dog treats! You are all here because you have pets and are tired of paying too much money on dog treats that are:

  • smelly
  • you have no idea how and why it lasts for more than one year in the cupboards
  • are making your pets itchy and poopy
  • you have no confidence in feeding to your precious dogs

Well, I am here to save your day! I have four dogs who eats the best kibbles I could find, but I don't have the same luck finding dog treats that have no preservatives.

Long story short, I bake treats that are made only with OATMEAL and gluten-free PEANUT BUTTER, plus a dash of purified water. THAT'S IT! No more, no less! I have tried blueberries and apples too, so if your pets would rather have those, let me know in the contact section!

Look, we're all just here trying to be the best fur parents our fur babies expect us to be! So be AWESOME and buy them good treats!
